Getting help and staying safe

Are you experiencing an emergency? Are you concerned about a friend or are unsure if it is an emergency? Are you or a friend unresponsive, injured, or in need of support?

Even if you’re not sure, or just concerned it could be an emergency, reach out for help!

Support is available and you won’t get in trouble for getting help. 

Emergency Services

If your emergency is on-campus, call Dalhousie Security before calling 911.  Dal Security will arrive to the scene quickly and can help coordinate with 911 on where they should go. Dal Security can also link your call with a 911 operator.

Campus Supports - Halifax 

Dalhousie Medical Campus Response Team (DMCRT)

  • Confidential, peer-led, judgement free approachable support
  • First aid support, responding and coordinating student safety concerns
  • Request DMCRT support via Dal Security Line or DalSAFE App Chat
  • Where to find us for support:
    • Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights 8pm - 8am.
    • Co-located with Dal Care Hubs during big campus events.

Dalhousie Care Hubs

  • Dal Care Crew are student staff who provide judgement-free support.
  • Free snacks, water, and harm reduction supplies.
    • Outside Studley Gym during big campus events.
    • Pop-up booths across Halifax campuses weekly.

Student Health & Wellness Centre Same-Day Counselling

  • Screen and assess your situation, discuss your options, suggest strategies for coping with immediate issues, create a wellness plan.
    • Available Monday – Saturday
  • Book same day appointmens online or by phone (902) 494-2171 starting at 8am Monday - Friday and 11am Saturday.

The Good Samaritan Act

The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act applies to ANYONE seeking emergency support during a drug overdose/poisoning, including the person calling for help, the person experiencing the overdose and anyone else on the scene. The Act protects those who seek help, and anyone else who is at the scene when help arrives.

The Act does not provide legal protection against more serious offences, such as:

  • outstanding warrants
  • production and trafficking of controlled substances
  • all other crimes not outlined within the Act
